In Proverbs 29:18 we read, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Clearly, the author meant something besides our usual definition of vision which is the faculty of being able to see. The vision being described in this scripture is something beyond your physical sight, but is instead an inner seeing. This inner vision arises out of your Power of Imagination.

The idea that imagination is a power that each of us possesses may see quite unusual to you for a variety of reasons. Often, imagination is related to creative endeavors like music and art. You may even think that unless you are involved in creative arts you are not very imaginative. In addition, imagination is often relegated to something false, unreal and unimportant. Someone may have told you, “Oh that’s all in your imagination.” Typically when those words are spoken it is in a negative context. I was often accused in my youth of “day dreaming” and it was implied in the accusation that there were better uses of my time than to sit around engaging in that activity! For the most part, imagination is not encouraged in our society. And so the idea that imagination is a Spiritual Power may seem unusual to you.

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of the Unity movement, spoke of Imagination as one of 12 powers that we each possess. These powers are being used all the time, whether we are conscious of them or not. Whether you believe you are imaginative or not, you are using your power of imagination! We have been made in the image and likeness of our creator. As such, how could we be anything less than creators ourselves? And if you and I are creators, then we are utilizing the Power of Imagination.

The Power of Imagination is the faculty within each one of us that allows us the ability to shape and form thought. Everything that has ever been created began as a thought in mind. You are creating your day, your week, your year, your life through the Power of Imagination in your mind. The choice is yours whether to create from a place of fear, lack and limitation; or whether to create from a place of abundance and possibility. Every time you engage in worry, you are simply engaging your Power of Imagination from a place of fear. What if you simply changed your mind in that moment and allowed yourself the opportunity to sit and imagine the possibility rather than the problem?

Although vision arises out of imagination, not everything that we imagine relates to the vision spoken of in Proverbs. Vision is born when imagination is centered in purpose. For what reason do you or I exist? Have you allowed yourself the opportunity to simply sit and daydream about the purpose for your existence in this moment? Where would the Power of your Imagination take you if you allowed yourself to expand beyond your limited thinking to the infinite possibility present in this moment for you and for your life?

If you are ready to embrace a greater vision for your life, and you would like support along the way, join us at Unity in Edinboro for our weekly Sunday Celebration Service at 11 a.m. Together we can create a world that works for everyone!

There is a saying that I’m sure we have all heard, “God never gives you more than you can handle.” It’s a statement that is meant to give comfort during times of challenge. When you are in the midst of the challenge, however, it may be the last thing you want to hear! It may be another one of those instances when you think you know more than God as in, “I know I can’t handle this!” And yet, as cliché as the statement is, there is also Truth within it.

Believe it or not, you have an unlimited well of strength within you. The question is, “How do I access this unlimited well of strength?” As you sit with this question, you may discover that the first step is to become aware of God’s Power and Presence within your very being. Many times, you and I do not give ourselves the opportunity to simply “Be still and know.” Our culture has taught us to move into the role of “fixer.” The first step in facing a challenge is often to rush right into doing. The key to accessing the unlimited well of strength within you is to stop, breathe, and remember, “I and the Father are One.” Start there. Sit there. Let the awareness of Oneness permeate your being as you allow the Power of God to move through you in the form of hope, expectancy, and possibility.

Set the intention that you will not take any action until you have first centered in God. Give yourself the gift of simply being. As you do so, you will discover that all that you need to meet every moment in grace is provided to you. You will discover the strength to get out of bed; to meet your financial or relationship challenge with a fresh idea; to forgive the unforgiveable; to send out yet another resume; to reach out and serve; to laugh; to stretch and to grow.

Accessing that well of strength is made easier when you have a daily practice of integrating the Power and Presence of God into every area of your life. Each time you pray, meditate, forgive, and serve another in love, you build a foundation of God’s Presence in your life. It is much easier to center in Strength when you have built an ongoing relationship with the Source of your strength.

Truly God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. If it is occurring in your life, you have the capacity to meet in ways that right now you may not be able to imagine. Give yourself the gift of stillness. Allow yourself to feel all that you are feeling, and then return to Truth, “I am filled with an unlimited well of strength right here and now.” Don’t go about the business of “doing” until you first arrive at this sense of “being.” And then allow God to inspire you into action!

If you would like support on your Spiritual journey in waking up and knowing God as the Source of all of your good, join us at Unity in Edinboro every Sunday morning at 11 a.m. for our Celebration Service. You will find open minds and warm hearts learning how to let our light shine no matter what is occurring around us!

In Matthew 5:37 Jesus tells us, “Let you ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no’. While this seems to be obvious advice, let us look a little more deeply at what he is saying.

So many times our yes arises out of a sense of duty, obligation, guilt, or tradition. Our no is often not expressed but held within from a sense of not wanting to disappoint or anger. How often is your yes or no coming from your honest and authentic voice?

And that’s not all. Too often we say neither yes nor no. We make no decision at all because it seems too difficult to make a decision. In this way, you can easily remain stuck in habitual thinking and acting because choosing something else seems too overwhelming. When you make no decision, you often don’t realize you are still saying yes to something and oftentimes that something is not what you would like!

What have you said yes to today? You’ve likely said yes to getting out of bed, getting dressed, driving to work, eating your meals, watching television. You may have said yes to a time of prayer or meditation. You may have said yes to spending some time on facebook or reading a newspaper. Whether you realize it or not, all the activity you are involved in throughout your day require a yes, even if that yes arises from an unconscious level.

At the same time the yes arose, the no was also implied. Saying yes to getting out of bed, you also said no to pulling the covers over your head for a few more moments of rest. As you drove to work, there is an implied no to whatever else may have been calling to you on this day.

Why is this so important to understand?

Well, that comes around to Jesus again. How often do you say yes, while in your mind you are fighting every step of the way? You may say yes to getting out of bed while at the same time your mind is thinking, “Oh I just want to sleep a little longer; I can’t wait for this day to end so I can crawl back in bed; I can’t wait until Saturday when I can sleep in again.” You get the picture. You’ve said yes in your action, but your thoughts are filled with no.
If you are saying or doing one thing while thinking something else, you are caught in conflict. Your yes is really a no even though you couldn’t tell that from your actions. And all that conflict removes you from the wonder, the glory, the beauty, the mystery, the abundance, and the joy of living each moment fully in God’s creation.

In February we hear a lot about the idea of love. Unfortunately, for many of us, we have come to understand love in such a way that it seems you can fall into and out of love. Love has often become trivialized. The idea of love as a power seems naïve. And yet, if God is love, then what could be more powerful than to be love expressing?

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of the Unity movement, defines love as the harmonizing power of the Universe. It is love that joins and binds together the universe and everything in it! From this perspective, love truly does make the world go round!

With this definition in mind, I have been giving a lot of thought to harmony in music. When a chord is played in harmony, all the notes work together to create a sound that is pleasing. If there is discord, the notes simply do not work together. By simply taking away one note from a chord, discord is created. Something is missing. By adding an extra note that is not in accord with the others, discord is again created. The notes, in and of themselves, are not a problem. It is only when a note is being combined with other notes that harmony or discord occurs.

The amazing thing about music is that an infinite number of songs and genres are created by simply combining individual notes. With all the songs that have already been written, there are still more songs yet to create. With the contribution of each individual note, a song is born. We all know harmony when we hear it. And we all know discord as well.

If I am experiencing discord in my life, I have the opportunity to allow love to express and create harmony from the discord. Like the notes of a song, I may be asked to let go of something within me that is contributing to the discord. I may have contributed a “note” that is simply not working with the other notes expressing. Perhaps I need to let go of my need to be right; the defenses with which I protect my heart; or the attitude with which I am sharing my words. It may be that there is something else I need to add to the other notes expressing. Perhaps I need to add deep listening, a kind word, or an attitude of compassion.

No matter what is occurring to create discord in my life, love is the answer. This power of love is not an emotion that comes and goes. This power of love is my True nature, your True nature, God’s nature. When we respond to life centered in the power of this love, our relationships come into harmony and all are lifted up!

Would you like support in coming to a deeper understanding of the power of love in your life? Join us at Unity in Edinboro on Sunday at 11 a.m. as we continue to support one another in becoming deeply committed to waking up in Oneness in God.

Everything begins in thought, even faith! In fact Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, defined faith as the perceiving power of the mind linked with the ability to shape substance. How do the thoughts that you hold in your mind affect the way you create out of the substance that is life?

In early January, when I was home with the flu, Gary asked me to drop a package off at UPS. As soon as I began driving, I noticed I had a flat tire. I pulled back into the garage and thought about Gary. You see, he also had the flu. Unlike me, however, he was not home in bed but out working in spite of feeling ill. There was no way I could ask him to change this tire after he had been out working all day with the flu. The problem, though, was that Gary always takes care of these things for me. Never once in my 50 years have I ever changed a tire! I had seen Gary do it often enough though, and so motivated by the idea that I did not want to ask him to do it when he came home from work, I decided to take care of the matter.

I pulled out the owner’s manual from my glove box, brought up Gary’s car jack from the barn, and following the instructions, proceeded to change the tire. He taught me well. I took the tire to be fixed, and discovered it had to be replaced. They had just one tire in stock. Since we had just been talking about needing new tires, I told them I would let them know if I wanted to order more. When I called Gary, I felt my buttons being pushed as he tried to brush the whole thing off to be dealt with later. “Just fix the one Joanne. Leave the rest.”

Then, he said the one thing that I have been shaking my head about ever since. “Don’t we have towing, Joanne? Why didn’t you just call someone to take care of it?” To be honest, it never occurred to me. To be honest, I never even stopped in the moment to pray and align myself with the power and wisdom that is God. To be honest, I went immediately into problem solving mode and in the process was not open to the abundance of possibility that is always present.

As I have contemplated this whole instance, I came to recognize another thought that was underneath of the thought that I wanted to help Gary. This thought was, “He’s going to be so grateful that I took care of this for him.” In addition, I became aware that the difficulty I experienced changing the tire, complete with a black and blue nail that was smashed in the process, was more fuel for the martyr complex. The more I suffer, the more grateful he will be.

As I have thought about this thought under the thought, I realized that this is the thought I was holding in faith that kept me from fully experiencing my good. And if this thought was affecting this experience, how many more situations do I experience in my life from that place of needing to suffer to receive love, appreciation, joy or acceptance? How has my faith in this idea out pictured in the experience that is my life?

I am choosing again. I invite you to consider doing the same. If you are experiencing struggle, pain, disappointment, worry, fear, loneliness, etc. in your life, what thought might you be holding that is supporting that experience? There is an abundance of GOoD waiting for you and I as we remember to place our faith in the inspiration, wisdom and love that is God.

We even hear people say, “I guess I just don’t have enough faith.” Somehow we have this idea that if we just believed enough, it would all be different. Perhaps what is needed is not more belief, but a deeper understanding of faith and how it is always at work in our lives.

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of the Unity movement, defines faith as, “the perceiving power of the mind linked with the ability to shape substance.” From this perspective, we can tell a lot about what we have faith in by becoming aware not only of what is in our lives, but what thoughts we hold in mind through which we are perceiving our world. Faith, then, is not something that comes and goes. Faith is always present. The greater question becomes, “In what have I placed my faith?”

Depending upon the source, it is said that you and I hold 12,000-70,000 thoughts every day. Yes, that is a lot of variance! The greater idea, however, is that we hold a lot of thoughts! Many of these thoughts are unconscious. We are caught up in habitual thinking. That thinking is influenced by the media, society, family, friends, and religion. We have been bombarded with outside ideas from the moment we are born. Often, these ideas are based in fear and separation.

The media fills us with images and ideas of people and situations we need to fear. Well meaning family and friends may do the same in the hopes of protecting us from some perceived threat or concern. Even religion may point us to what is wrong with us rather than what possibility exists within us. When we get caught up in a thought pattern, that idea represents where we have placed our faith.

Those thought patterns that we hold, then, begin to create the outer circumstances of our lives. We hold conversations and take action based on the thoughts that we hold. This in turn creates the condition of our lives. If your thoughts are dominated by lack, limitation and fear you will undoubtedly be experiencing situations in your life that support your beliefs. The same is true if your thoughts are dominated by possibility, love and hope. You see your brain is designed to gather evidence to support your belief system!

As you and I begin to come to a deeper understanding that we are always living in faith, and that the greater question is, “in what have I placed my faith?” we will come to a powerful place of conscious choice. We can consciously choose new thoughts to hold in mind and begin to transform through faith!

When a pilot flies a plane, he must be aware of his current location in relation to his flight pattern. A one degree error could result in being miles from his target destination. I would invite you to consider this powerful idea in relation to getting out of your rut of habitual thinking. Just a one degree shift in your thoughts, consistently over time, will offer you an opportunity to create a new destination for yourself in life.

We have 1440 minutes a day. Based on the idea that there are 360 degrees in a circle, a one degree shift would be the equivalent of just 4 minutes. What would happen if you focused for 4 short minutes a day on transforming the thoughts you hold? How would your life be different one year from now? Change your thoughts, transform your faith, and watch your life unfold in amazing ways.

If you would like support on your spiritual journey through faith, why not join us at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning for Unity in Edinboro’s weekly Celebration Service. We are a community of open minds and hearts waiting to welcome you with love and acceptance!

Do you find yourself saying, “I can’t wait for winter to end”; or perhaps, “Is it Friday yet”; or perhaps “Come on retirement”; or maybe, “Will these kids ever be adults?” You get the idea. If you are like me, you may find yourself wishing time away without realizing it! And yet every moment is a new moment, a new beginning, a new year starting.

It seems as though this idea of wishing time away begins early in life. I couldn’t wait to start driving, to graduate high school, and then college. I couldn’t wait to get married and have a family. I couldn’t wait to find success, buy my first home, and travel the world. While plans are important, and vision is necessary, neither are replacements for experiencing the present moment with all its possibility.

I’ve heard a lot lately about being “in the moment.” It is something that most of us would like to experience, but don’t know how. We’ve become human doings rather than human beings. We are on a race to the next big moment in our lives while missing out on the beauty, the joy, and the amazing potential that this holy moment provides.
How do you live in the moment? The first step is awareness. You may find that much of your day is lived unconsciously. You hit the alarm a time or two, rush out the door, stress through the day with your eye on the weekend, come home to dinner in front of the television, and then go to bed prepared to do it all again tomorrow. What does such a day look like when lived with awareness?

With awareness, when you wake up in the morning, you may take a moment to simply center in gratefulness for the new day and the possibility that it presents. You may sit and eat your breakfast simply enjoying the flavor of the food without a newspaper or morning show to keep you company. You may look at the driver in the lane next to you and offer them a blessing. You may pause throughout your day to take a breath and become aware of your surroundings—what you see, smell, hear, taste, touch. You may prepare your dinner with loving attention aware that it is the nourishment that will provide for your family’s health and well being. You may sit and have a conversation during the meal. You may choose to leave the television off and find a new way to connect. You may end your day considering the many blessings you have experienced in that day.

As you set the intention to become aware throughout your day, you will find that you have a choice. Do you want to choose to wish this moment away? Or do you want to discover the full possibility that this moment provides? It’s all a choice. 2013 contains 525,949 minutes. As I write this, we are already 10,000 minutes into the new year. Let’s not waste another one wishing it away!

The Mayan calendar has come to an end, and it appears as though we all survived. It is amazing how many times the end of the world has been predicted. I once saw a cartoon that depicted a prophet carrying a sign that stated, “We are all doomed. The world is never going to end.” Are we doomed? Is there no hope?

As the new year arrives, there is a sense of new opportunity and hope. Each year we make our resolutions of how this year will be different. We set intentions for better health, better income, more generosity, and more loving relationships. The year stretches out before us and we start out the new year full of the possibility for what could be. Too often, however, as January unfolds to February unfolds to March unfolds to December, we find ourselves at the end of another year wondering, “What has changed? Are we all doomed?”

Jesus stated, “I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly.” Where is this abundant life of which Jesus spoke? Does it only occur once we leave this life and journey into the next eternal unknown? Should you and I give up on the idea that an abundant life, here and now, is our inheritance through Christ?

Jesus also told us that the Kingdom of God is at hand. He told us we would not find it in a specific location…lo here it is, or there. The Kingdom of God is a state of consciousness, a state of knowing that I and the Father are one. From that awareness, you and I are asked to take responsibility for revealing the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth.

Jesus taught us the way. He taught us to forgive. He taught us to serve. He taught us to be still and know God in each moment. He taught us to love one another. He taught us that nothing of this world is as important as the awareness that I and the Father are one.

You and I can create a new world. We can create a world where the power of love heals the love of power. We can create a world where lack and limitation is replaced with sharing and generosity. We can create a world where diversity is honored, ideas are shared, and hope is restored. We can…but will we? What will it take?

It will take more than a specific date on the calendar. It will take more than regulating guns or arming teachers. It will take more than avoiding fiscal cliffs and electing the right politicians. This work that needs to be done to create a new world, an abundant life, the Kingdom of Heaven here and now, requires each one of us to take personal responsibility for the way you and I are showing up from moment to moment.

There is hope. There is possibility. There is an abundance of love, creativity, wisdom, understanding, strength, and life. The answer is simple…love the one before you. That’s it. If each one of us simply loved the one before us, the world would transform in an instant. Until that day arrives, I invite you to become aware of all the ways you have built up walls of defense around your heart and choose again. One person at a time, we can make the choice to create a world that works for all.

If you would like support as you wake up and know that you are one in God, join us at Unity in Edinboro for our 11 a.m. Sunday morning service. Transform yourself…transform your world.

Outside, it appears as though the darkness is overtaking the light as the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer. The leaves have fallen, and the trees stand lifeless. The flowers have died. The days are often gloomy and cold. And yet, it is the season of Advent; the season of hope.

Advent is a time of preparation, but for what are we preparing? In these weeks we can often feel overwhelmed with activity. In addition to our every day, ordinary lives, we also have gifts for which to shop; presents to wrap; a Christmas tree to decorate; cookies to cut out; holiday parties to attend; cards to read and write; and family gatherings with all the expectations and frustrations that can arise. With all of this hustle and bustle, it can be easy to forget the one thing that is most important of all.

Too often, we imagine that something external will satisfy the need for love, or peace, or joy. We hope that if we buy just the right gifts this year, we may feel the love of family and friends. We hope that if we plan just the right holiday dinner, we may finally experience a sense of peace in gathering. We hope that our loved ones will know us well enough to give us just the right present so that we can finally light up with the joy of the season. More often than not, however, we end up feeling empty and alone.

With a shift in focus, however, you can discover that all of the love, all of the peace, all of the joy that you desire can be found within you. As you center, become still, and listen, you will discover the Spirit of God within you waiting to be born through the activity of your life. As you continue to center in this, your True Self, your thoughts, words and actions will begin to align with the possibility that each moment contains. Life will be a deeper and richer experience as you connect with those around you in a loving, kind and compassionate way.

Christmas invites us each to give birth to that Divine light of Christ that is the full potential for each one of us. Rather than hustling and bustling, this birth asks you to be still and become aware of the Presence and Power of God within your very being. This is the very center out of which hope arises. In spite of the darkness that surrounds you, within your very being is your hope of glory.

It is in the darkest of nights that the stars glow the brightest. It is in the darkest of experiences, that the light within you offers the greatest hope. Remember to look beyond appearances and center in that Divine Spirit and give birth to a greater reality for your life!

If you would like to be supported on your Spiritual journey in waking up and knowing the Presence of God in your life, join us each Sunday at Unity in Edinboro for our 11 a.m. service.

Jesus tells you that the Kingdom of God is within you and all around you (Luke 17:21). With these words, you are asked to remember that there is no need to wait for a someday heaven in which to experience your good. Your good is available right here and right now! In Unity, we understand the Kingdom of Heaven to be the Kingdom of ever-expanding good. This is our birthright. We are here to reveal together a reality far greater than one of lack, limitation and not enoughness. This greater Reality begins for each of us as we expand our consciousness to a deeper understanding of what we each are in Truth.

So what is the Truth of you? Unity teaches that there are two aspects of yourself with which to identify. Most of us identify with the personality, or that part of us which believes itself to be separate from others and from God. It is the mask that you and I wear when we interact with one another. I call this our little s self. It is that self which is intent on keeping you, and those around you, little. The focus of the self is to keep you safe, protected, and small. It is that within you that experiences victim-hood, blame, fear, doubt, worry and judgment. Living in the consciousness of personality, or little s self, I tend to focus on the problems I see. It is easy to be overwhelmed, in chaos, and afraid when I identify with this little self. Most of us have accepted this aspect of our being without question.

Unity also teaches that our True Self is our individuality, that aspect of our Self that knows that we are undivided from God. As individuality, you are God expressing as you! This is our big S Self. From this perspective, you are asked to embrace a greater vision for yourself and for your life. Here your focus is on what is possible in this moment. Here you embody love, wisdom, creativity, and joy. In order to birth a greater Reality for your life and for the world, you stretch into accepting this greater Self. Here you discover that each challenge you face is but an opportunity to allow more of your True nature to be revealed.

Are you ready to release your little view of self and accept a greater Self…one that knows its divinity, knows its possibility, knows its activity arises from the activity of God? Are you ready to move from victim to victor; from blame to responsibility; from fear to courage; from judgment to love? This is how you allow a consciousness of ever expanding good to be revealed in your life and it all begins with Self-acceptance.

At Unity in Edinboro, we support and encourage each one to know the True Nature of your being. If you would like support on your spiritual path, join us each Sunday at 11 a.m. for our celebration service.
