Walliser, a former organic market grower, will share tips and techniques for growing a high-yielding, beautiful vegetable garden without a lot of fuss. Favorite varieties for organic growing as well as topics from amending your soil to pest control will be discussed. Attendees will be taught about the 4-cycle crop rotation schedule and some simple ways to attract beneficial insects to the garden.

Walliser co-hosts “The Organic Gardeners” on KDKA radio in Pittsburgh. She is a contributing editor for Organic Gardening magazine where you can read her ‘Good Bug, Bad Bug’ feature in each issue. Walliser writes two weekly gardening columns for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and is a regular contributor to Fine Gardening, Urban Farm, Popular Farming, Hobby Farms and Hobby Farm Home magazines.

She is also heard on Essential Public Radio’s environmental news program and can be found lecturing at garden clubs, botanic gardens, arboretums and other public garden facilities across the United States. She received her degree in ornamental horticulture from The Pennsylvania State University and is the former owner of a 25-acre organic market farm.
On Sunday, May 5, Goodell Gardens will present the first installment of the 2013 Lecture Series: Tea Time Talks, with Make & Take Worm Bins. Attendees will learn how to use vermicomposting – the practice of using worms to make compost – to compost kitchen scraps. Vermicompost is a natural, slow-release fertilizer for plants.

Learn from Penn State Master Gardeners Judy Vespoli and Maria Blakeslee, who will teach you why worms are worth their weight in “black gold.” Following their instruction, you’ll learn how to build a working worm bin, what to feed your worms and how to care for them.

Cost of admission is $15 for members of Goodell Gardens, $20 for nonmembers, and includes all materials needed (including worms!) and refreshments. Class will begin at 3 p.m., and will be held in the Events Barn.
Because class size is limited, preregistration is required. To register, email info@goodellgardens.org or call (814) 734-6699.

Goodell Gardens & Homestead is located at 221 Waterford Street (Route 6N), just east of downtown Edinboro. For more information, or to purchase a membership, visit www.goodellgardens.org today!

5k Fun Run/Walk

The 5K run/walk is a family friendly community event that will begin with a cannon start. The theme of our event is a spirit run, which is designed to bring the community together through physical activity and team spirit. Each participant will be encouraged to show their team spirit through costumes and apparel and awards will be offered to the most spirited runner or walker. The 5k fun run/walk event will start at 10:00A.M. on May 4th, 2013. The runners will start at Scotland road and end with one loop on the track. Due to the nature of the event we will not offer official timing. We will offer prizes to the first male and the female finishers.

Lancer Loop

The Lancer Loop will begin immediately following the 5K event at 11:00 A.M. There will be different age groups and each age group will start the race at a different time. The kids will run a 100m, 200m, or 400m depending on their age. The Lancer Loop will be available to school-aged children, and each participant will receive a prize at the end of their run.

Boro Fitness Frenzy/Event Social –

Youth activities will be offered during the 5k fun run/walk and after the youth fun run. A parent/guardian/supervisor must be present with the child during the activities. We will offer a variety of fun activities. The children can go and participate and whatever station they would like. We will offer stations like a parachute game, a hula hoop area, and a dance area. To correspond with our spirit theme; we will have mascots, spirit games, and spirit awards. The event social and awards ceremony will take place after the kids run.
