Shirley Mae Finnegan Severance died peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2023.  She was 87 years old.

Shirley was born in Westport, Pennsylvania.  She moved to Edinboro to graduate high school and then attend Orra Jean Beauty Academy in Erie where she earned her Cosmetology license, for which she was quite proud.

Shirley married the love of her life, George Earle Severance and together they had three children.  Their son, Kenten, predeceased his parents on April 11, 1959.  Shirley enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom, tending to her family, home and yard. When her children began middle school, she became employed at Macko MFG and continued to work there until her retirement.

She will be deeply missed by her family which include her daughter, Karen and her husband David Shelhamer, as well as her granddaughter, Morgan Shelhamer.  Her son, George Earle Severance, II, lovingly cared for his mother at her home for as long as possible until dementia and other health issues made it impossible to do so safely.

Per Shirley’s wishes, services will be private and at the convenience of the family. The Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Edinboro, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.

Burial will be in Edinboro Cemetery.  Memorials may be made in Shirley’s name to the Anna Shelter, 1555 E. 10th St., Erie, PA  16511 or theannashelter.com/donate. To send condolences please visit www.gluntfuneralhome.com.

Green Forestry and Carbon Credit Education at Edinboro University https://edinboroonline.com/2023/02/green-forestry-and-carbon-credit-education-at-edinboro-university/ Sun, 26 Feb 2023 04:37:49 +0000 https://edinboroonline.com/?p=33888 Edinboro, PA: The Northwest Pennsylvania Woodland Association (NWPWA) is hosting an educational program on carbon storage and carbon credits at Edinboro University on March 18, 2023. Doctor Melissa Kreye, Assistant Professor, Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, Penn State University, will be presenting the facts behind forest carbon storage and its benefits to the environment. In addition to Dr. Kreye, representatives from the Family Forest Carbon Program, Finite Carbon, and the Natural Carbon Exchange will be on hand to explain the inner workings of carbon credits.

On the motivation behind hosting the event, Bill Benedict, President of the NWPWA, explained that “Many families in northwestern Pennsylvania own enough woodland to make a difference in reducing carbon in the atmosphere, and the government will compensate woodland owners for preserving their woods. But there is a lot to learn about the potential income, responsibilities, and restrictions on property use. We intend to clarify how it all works and present the opportunities for local woodland owners to add to the benefits their property already provides.”

The program is scheduled to run from 9:00am until 12:00pm on Saturday, March 18th at the Edinboro University Pogue Student Center, 405 Scotland Road, Edinboro, PA. Admission is free. Registration begins at 8:30am. There will be plenty of time to ask questions of Dr. Kreye and the carbon business experts before or after the presentations. Refreshments will be available. Please RSVP. To do so, or for more information, email NWPAWoods@gmail.com or phone Bill Benedict at 814-881-4779.

About NWPWA: Founded in 1999, the NWPWA provides education on the methods and benefits of forest management, promotes sustainable forestry and forest stewardship, and assists woodland owners in achieving their goals by sharing experience and expertise. NWPWA conducts tours and workshops in which woodland owners and professionals share their experiences about various forest management practices. Events are held about four times each year – mostly in the field. Members include landowners, forest managers, woodland professionals, and anyone interested in the forests of Northwestern PA. Most of our members and activities are in Erie, Crawford, and Warren counties in PA.
