EDINBORO, PA (April 22, 2014) – James W. Parker Middle School student Libby Woods ran her first half-marathon this past month. The sixth-grader took part in the Run the Blue Grass Half in Lexington, Kentucky on March 29.
Prior to this race, Libby had run a few 5k’s and ran both the 5k and 10k at Presque Isle for the St. Patrick’s Day Distance Festival.
Runners received a beautiful horse medallion, which was Libby’s inspiration to run the 13.1 miles. The twelve-year old finished the race in 2:15:48 with a negative split. She had a saying that she thought of during the race when things would get tough “Hey, you remember that guy who gave up? Yeah, neither does anyone else.”
This was the 5th annual Run the Bluegrass Half Marathon. This event takes place at the famed Keeneland Race Course, which was home to several scenes of the 2003 film Seabiscuit. Well-known throughout the thoroughbred horse-racing world, Keeneland today is on the National Register of Historic Places and is still a mecca for racing enthusiasts, serving as the site for several preparation races for the springtime Kentucky Derby.
