Governor’s Budget Proposal Not the Final Word on Higher Education
By Rep. John Evans (R-Erie/Crawford)

As the state legislator who represents Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, I was greatly concerned about the devastating reduction in funding for the State System of Higher Education in the budget proposal.

I wasn’t alone. Many of my colleagues and I are fighting to ensure that the cuts contained in the governor’s proposal are not the final funding numbers. Within the past couple of weeks, I have had the chance to speak with students, faculty, alumni and administration at Edinboro and the other SSHE universities. We are all on the same page that the 53 percent budget cut would impose considerable hardships on the schools and the students they serve.

As our area knows full well, Edinboro and the 13 other SSHE schools are strong economic drivers in their communities, and they provide quality education to thousands of students around Pennsylvania. That is why I have been in talks with our House Republican leadership about this issue.

On Monday, Majority Leader Mike Turzai announced that our caucus will be closely examining education funding, revisiting the Basic Education funding formula with the Senate, studying ways to provide mandate relief to school districts statewide, and working to restore some of the proposed cuts to higher education.

We are committed to keeping the overall budget spending level at the current $27.3 billion limit, and I am optimistic that we can find ways to shift funding away from ineffective programs and move the funding back to education.
