Shift Consciousness

Albert Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” Spiritual growth is about transforming our consciousness. What does a shift in consciousness look and feel like? At Unity, we talk a lot about expanding our consciousness. This may sound esoteric, or out there, but the truth of the matter is that this expanded consciousness leads you to a new experience of life.

I became a Spiritual Leader more than 15 years ago. When I began, I was as green as could be! I knew how to deliver a Sunday message, and did great teaching classes, but many other nuances of leading a spiritual community were unknown to me. I had been an accountant, working on my own as a bookkeeper. I really had no leadership training whatsoever! I found myself immersed in on the job training.

At first, my focus was on doing my best to keep everyone happy. Have you ever tried to do that? In many ways, it is like a dog chasing its tale. In other words, it is impossible! However, all my life I had been a people pleaser, a peace keeper, and in my consciousness, that is all I knew how to do.

In the process, I confronted the aspects of myself that knew I was not good enough, that knew no matter how hard I tried it would never be enough. When I looked out over the pews on Sunday
morning, I could only see the problems. As hard as I spun, things simply got out of control.

Losing control was something I feared. The great unknown of losing control was the final push of shifting my consciousness from I’m not enough, to with God all things are possible. The shift was gradual, but in the process I learned how to really listen within for God’s vision for my life and for our Spiritual community.

A healing arose within me while sitting in Centering Prayer. A thought arose, a thought brought about I’m sure because of this shifting in my consciousness. That thought was, “Every time you think you are not enough, it is a slap in my face.” In that instant, I got it, and I’ve not looked back.

I used to look out over the pews on Sunday and see all of the problems. Now I look out over the pews on Sunday and see the possibility before me. I realized what is possible when you co-create with the Power and Presence of God knowing you have ALL that you need to succeed.

What does a shift in consciousness look and feel like? It looks like possibility and feels like joy, gratefulness, expectation, wonder. I know I’ve still got lots of growing to do, but I am discovering the possibility in the stretching.

Abundant peace and blessings… Rev. Joanne
