When You Wish Upon A Star

Don Miguel Ruiz tells us in his book, The Mastery of Love, that we are all artists creating the masterpiece of our lives. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I don’t feel like my life is a masterpiece. On days that my buttons are being pushed, or I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or I am simply overwhelmed with all there is to be done, it feels like I am living in a mess rather than a masterpiece. It is at times like this that I am called to remember the harmonizing power of love to transform the moment, the situation, or my own state of mind.

Our brains are designed to react automatically. When a situation occurs in our lives, the neural pathways react based on what has occurred in the past and what has kept us safe before. According to Ruiz, all of us have been domesticated to being human. For myself, I know that all of us have been conditioned to being human. We are born into this human condition and learn what it is to be human, while forgetting that we are divine in the process. One of our main tasks is to wake up from this human conditioning and consciously choose to respond rather than unconsciously reacting.

The way in which each of us wakes up is to intentionally live in awareness. Are you aware of the stories you tell over and over about yourself in your mind? Are you aware of the deep hurts that you carry? Are you aware of the defenses you have placed around your heart? Are you aware of how these stories, hurts and defenses cause your current moment reactions? While I do not believe we need to go deeply into the stories, hurts and defenses in order to heal them, I do believe we need to be aware of them.

When you wish upon a star....
When you wish upon a star….

In Unity, where our focus is so much upon the positive and practical, we can be good at ignoring and/or stuffing these “shadow” parts of ourselves. However, this rarely creates permanent transformation and shift in our lives. When you and I are willing to acknowledge this shadow side, we can finally shine a light upon it and allow it to heal. This takes courage, but it is only in our willingness to look that we can make the shift from the mess to the masterpiece.

In my own life, I am aware of many experiences that I have gone through that caused me to build up defenses around my heart. In so doing, I also have felt the emptiness and the frustration that those defenses also cause. Sometimes I have lowered those defenses in order to allow someone in. However, often times I do so with the understanding that the one I am allowing in will in some way make me feel better. My husband, my children, my family and my friends will make me feel loved, secure, and appreciated. And while they may for a time, or maybe for much of the time, all of them have let me down at some point. What I have come to realize is that it is unfair to make anyone responsible for my feelings of love, security, appreciation, joy, peace, etc.

In Unity, we know we have the Spirit of the Divine, our Christ Nature, present within each and every one of us. Through this Christ Nature, we need not look outside of ourselves to fill any of these needs. We can drop the defenses around our heart and take full responsibility in discovering the power within us to fulfill all of our needs.

An old Disney song includes the following lyrics, “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. Everything your heart desires will come to you.” In the book, Ruiz tells us that in the process of domestication, we are told lies. The lyrics of this song appears to be one of those lies, as I have wished upon plenty of stars and not had those dreams come true! However, I also found that one simple word can be changed and the statement moves from a lie to a truth for me. “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. Everything your heart desires will come THROUGH you.”

Own your power and allow life to move through you. Let joy flow through you. Let peace flow through you. Let love flow through you. This week’s spiritual practice is to make the choice each day to engage in one thing that would bring you happiness and is not dependent on anyone else!

Abundant peace and blessings… Rev. Joanne
